The suggestions I present in the following are ways to keep your physical items (many of them might be mementos) out of a box. You might have stashed them there and look at them only rarely or even forget about them. See if you can use one of the following ideas for some of your joy-bringing but currently “useless” things.
Take A Photo
Rather than keeping one of your physical belongings, you may want to take a photo of it (e.g., tickets of a concert you went to or a playbill you saved) and let the very item go. By taking a (digital) snapshot of something, you capture its presence at the very moment and look back at it at any time without the item cluttering up your space.
Find A New Purpose
You might want to assign an item you’re not using for what it’s meant for a new task. For instance, that pretty soup bowl you love but don’t use in the kitchen could be put on the shelf in the entryway and serve as a catch-all for your purse’s contents. Voila!
Repurpose It
For example, if you like a dress because of its pretty fabric but never wear it due to fit issues, repurpose it! If it’s the patterns and colors you like, you could think about having it tailored into a skirt that fits. Or you might want to make something out of it that’s not even clothing anymore. How about a pillow, a wall drape, a stuffed animal or a custom quilt out of t-shirts? The possibilities are plenty. And it can be anything, not just clothing or fabric. Think creatively when it comes to getting more joyful “use” out of joyful mementos.
Display It
Sometimes, there’s no new purpose you can find for something. But you still want to keep the actual item just to look at it from time to time. How about you maximize the joy you’re getting from the item by displaying it in a more prominent way rather than put it away in a box or something? Hang fabrics that spark joy on the wall in your closet or put those funny figurines in one of your kitchen cabinets for you to enjoy. This way you can see those items every day whenever you open your closet or cabinet.
