1) You Will Forget
If you store a portion of your things out of sight in a storage unit, chances are high that you’ll forget what you put in there. Let alone, that you have the storage unit. I’ve seen this time and time again. Whenever I talk to people about their storage compartments that are located in a different location than their home (be it in a building’s basement or a space that is rented in a facility miles away), they often have forgotten what’s in there. Out of sight, out of mind. What’s the point of keeping something that you don’t even know what it is? You’ve forgotten anyways!
2) Do The Math
If you’re paying money every month for your unit, I encourage you to do the math! Calculate the current value of the items stored and then put it against your rental fee. How long have you had the storage unit? After how many months or years (will) you have paid more in rent than the items’ total worth? It might be cheaper to acquire the things anew once you actually need them (which might be never) than to store them forever “just in case”.
3) Time Spent
Think about all the time you spend tending to your storage unit. First, you spend time moving things to the unit. Then, you’ll likely spend time getting things in and out of it (until you forget about the space entirely –see no. 1). Think about how much time you’ll be spending every year doing that. Also, think about what else you could do during this time. How much is your time worth? Is it worth it shuffling stuff from point A to B? The hassle and the stress that comes with it? Yeah, no, I don’t think so either.
4) Live In The Now
If you’re reluctant to get rid of something, it’s usually because of an attachment to the past or a fear of the future. Things that are put away in a storage unit are the perfect example of this. Why are we putting stuff away that we don’t need and use regularly? It’s stuff that our present being has no use for. Only the now is what matters. Accept it and untie yourself from any burden your current self has no use for. If it was something really meaningful to you from your past, it wouldn’t waste away in a storage unit. If you’re holding on to things because you think you might need them one day, think again. Your future you will be different. Your taste changes and evolves. Things go out of style. You name it. Live in the now; now!
