Are you someone who tends to hold on to heaps and heaps of sentimental items? You cherish these items because they help you remember certain moments in your life or people you love. Or you don’t really love them, but they were passed down to you and you couldn’t possibly get rid of them because – well, “you’re not supposed to” discard these kinds of things. Does that sound like you? Then read on…
Somehow you feel like your mementos (or some of them) are weighing you down. Whether it’s the sheer number of sentimental items you have or the kind of items. Or both.
You don’t need a heap of clutter to bring back memories of those you love.
(Rita Emmett)
If you’re being honest with yourself, you’re a little overwhelmed. You feel guilty even entertaining the idea not wanting to keep them. Because you “should” hold on to them. Is this you?
If yes, consider this:
- Your memories live in your head & not within an object. Throwing out the object won’t delete your memories. The object only served as a vehicle. It’s nothing more.
- Objects are NOT sacred. Who’s declaring them “sacred” is you. And only you. So you can also declare them “un-sacred”.
- If you’re unable to appreciate all the sentimental items you own because of their sheer number, what’s the point in having them at all? Truly, think about it! You only have a limited amount of time and energy. Use it wisely.
- If you feel your energy levels drop thinking about these objects, it’s a clear sign that they don’t bring you joy and you need to reduce. Act on it. Declutter to lift your energy.
- Why do you have something if it doesn’t make you feel joyful? Really – why?
It’s totally ok to get rid of mementos if they’re not serving you. I give you “permission”. It might sound silly, but this is often what people need to hear. That they have permission to do something. I officially give you permission. It’s ok to let things go.
Do you need help decluttering, deal with the guilt part and tidying up once and for all? Do you want to create new systems and habits for the long run? Then let’s talk! Book a complimentary eval call here.
