I think it’s no secret that decluttering and getting organized feels good for pretty much everyone. Decluttering can significantly boost your mental health and if you tidy according to the KonMari Method™ especially so! Read on for six reasons why KonMari tidying is the new therapy:
1) It Makes You Reflect
If you declutter and organize according to the KonMari Method™, it requires you to touch each and every single thing you own and make a decision about it. Oftentimes, this is like going down memory lane and can make you re-live certain moments. It makes you reflect on certain parts of your life – whether it be good or bad – and, in some way, DEAL with it (Just like you do in therapy, right?). Because you need to make a decision about that thing that reminds you of that time.
2) The Act Of Decluttering Is Cathartic
When you make the decision to tidy up konmari-style, you usually get rid of things. Some purge a lot and some a little less – but typically you’re saying goodbye to the things that don’t serve you any longer. And that very act has a cathartic effect. Not only do you “cleanse” your physical space but your inner being as well, as our exterior influences our inner state not in a small way.
3) You Feel Accomplished
Getting your home in order is no small feat for a lot of people. So if you set out on a whole-home KonMari tidying marathon AND finish it, that is something to feel proud of. You made a decision and you pushed through it. It helps you feel accomplished, it elevates your self-esteem and overall makes you feel better about yourself.
4) Gratitude Boosts Mental Health
Expressing gratitude is a key piece in the KonMari Method™. You’re supposed to thank your items for their service and treat them accordingly. It turns out that practicing gratitude has a positive influence on your mental health. Gratitude is about noticing the good things in your life and taking a moment to be thankful for them.
5) Choosing Joy
The KonMari Method™ is not just about getting rid of things but primarily about surrounding yourself with joy. You’re supposed to choose the items that bring you joy and let go of the rest. If that doesn’t make you a happier person, I don’t know what does. Especially, if you take it one step further and apply the method to other areas of your life as well.
6) A KonMari Consultant Aids You
And last but not least, if you’re working with a certified KonMari consultant (such as myself → Services / About), you get someone who you can talk to about those things you’re struggling to let go of. And so much more. Granted, I’m NOT a therapist – but so many of my clients have told me that going through the process has felt like therapy. Plus, everything we talk about is confidential, of course. And just having this someone by your side that you can trust, is not judging you (and who is NOT a friend or spouse) is often tremendously helpful in releasing things in your home and in your mind.
