Yes, it’s this time a year again – gifting season! Personally, I’m not a fan of buying gifts JUST for the sake of gift-giving. However, it is nice to show appreciation to the people in your life you love and receive the same appreciation back by way of a gift. Since gifts often tend to create additional clutter and guilt around it, I wanted to list 8 clutter-free gift ideas* both for the minimalist gift giver and/or the minimalist gift receiver.
Time
How about you gift quality time to one of your loved ones? This could take the form of an entire day spent together. You could plan the day ahead and fill it with things the gift receiver likes to do, e.g., a yoga class in the morning, followed by brunch, kayaking, going to a museum, etc.
Experiences
I’m a big fan of buying non-material things as gifts. Those gifts often take the form of experiences. Taking into consideration what the person likes, you can buy tickets to a concert, a play, musical or cruise. The possibilities are endless and I’m certain you can find a suitable experience for every kind of person.
Food
We all have to eat. And who doesn’t love food? Although food is tangible, it needs to be eaten up as (most) foods are perishable. Taking preferences, tastes and dietary restrictions into account, you can get creative here! How about a food gift basket, home-made jams, cookies or an excellent wine? I’m sure the food lovers amongst your friends and family members will appreciate such a gift.
Subscriptions & Memberships
There are so many subscription services out there nowadays that it’s almost hard to choose from. Again do your research in terms of what the gift-receiver would appreciate and subscribe away! There are subscriptions for coffee, online magazines, food subscription boxes, CSA boxes, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. Another (similar) option would be memberships or passes to museums, clubs or the like.
Service
Everyone likes to be pampered every once in a while. Thus, gifting a day in one’s favorite spa, an individual treatment (e.g., facial, massage, scrub) is always a great idea and well received. But service doesn’t necessarily need to be wellness-related. For instance, you could gift Home Organizing sessions, an astrology reading or a consultation with an interior designer if this is something that would be something the gift receiver would like.
Lessons/Classes
Gifting lessons or classes are great for people who have a particular interest in a specific subject (e.g., photography, pottery, web design, etc.) but are too frugal to invest in lessons/further education themselves. Buy some lessons/find a great class and enroll them!
Gift Cards
Yes, gift cards are not a super unique gift idea. However, I’d be very happy to receive a gift card from a store I buy from often (e.g., Amazon or Whole Foods) instead of receiving a physical knick-knack I have no use for.
Ebook Reader
For those people in your life that are still buying books to read, you should consider gifting an ebook reader. Some people certainly prefer to read “real” books, others might be open to switching. An added bonus that comes with ebook readers is that they prevent added book clutter in the future! Check out Kindle and Audible gift memberships (for audiobooks).
