This is part of the “Doing New Things” series where I’m trying to get out of my daily routine and explore newness by – you guessed it – doing new things. 52 new things in one year to be exact. Read more about my intention behind it here and view the complete list of things here. Today I’m writing about my experience visiting Top of The Rock in New York City (#43 on my list).
The Top of The Rock is an observatory deck on top of the Rockefeller Center. Many, many years ago when I was visiting New York City for the first time, I went on top of the Empire State Building (which was the tallest building in NYC back then). You can’t go outside on the Empire State Building and neither can you on the Freedom Tower (which nowadays is the highest building in NYC).
The Top of The Rock observatory deck gives you the opportunity to step out into the open and glance down at the cityscape from all sides. I went at night around 7pm in order to experience it by daylight as well as when the sun set. Of course, many other people had that same idea. So I was unable to snap a picture of the sundown without people. Nevertheless, I got a few nice shots and the weather was just perfect for this little adventure. I especially loved the sky with its unique cloud formation that day.
I had bought my ticket online which turned out to be a smart decision. You can choose the time you want to go but you can also change it at anytime. With an online ticket you don’t need to stay in line. You can go straight to the top if you arrive within your time slot.
All in all, it was a nice thing to do. Being tourist in the city I call home is fun and something I intend to do more of.
Do you sometimes play tourist in your hometown?
