Currently, I’m reading Karen Kingston’s book “Creating Sacred Space with Feng Shui.” There is a chapter in it about why it’s crucial to declutter. She points out that removing clutter from your home is extremely important and a pre-requisite to practicing Feng Shui in a successful way. Actually, if you practice Feng Shui in a cluttered space it could even worsen your situation!
I want to share a few quotes from the book (emphasis added by yours truly) pertaining to the removal of clutter because that’s what I’m in business for after all. Her writing has helped myself re-think my own attachment to certain belongings and prompted me to let go of even more things after I had already KonMari’d my home. In other words, these are powerful excerpts and they inspire my work with clients.
Items Require Your Attention
Realize that everything you own has a hold on your attention. The more clutter you have, the more energy is tied up in mundane matters. Clear out your clutter to leave yourself free to really make a difference in the world.
If you remove all the unnecessary and unloved items in your home, you instantly feel relieved and much lighter. Have you ever experienced that? It is because of what Karen Kingston says that every item you own has an energy field around it and requires your attention. Even if it’s out of your sight and buried in a closet! You still think about it and know it’s there and thus requiring some of your own energy. Do yourself a favor and get rid of anything that’s bothering you, consciously or sub-consciously!
Clutter Because Of The Unknown
People unconsciously keep clutter in order to suppress their own aliveness. They may want to change and improve their lives, but their subconscious minds are afraid to journey into the unknown. If you have lots of clutter, understand that you have it because on some level you need it right now. Understanding why you need it helps you to begin to release your clutter and cease to accumulate it in the future.
I find that most of my clients are in a phase of change in their lives. They either think about shifting things in certain areas or have already begun to implement changes but are sort of stuck. If you’re in a similar situation, start to declutter and organize your home. It will most certainly help you get a clearer head and implement the life changes you’re striving for.
Items Hold Positive/Negative Energy
Don’t ask yourself, “Will this come in handy some day?” The answer to this question will always be “maybe,” which means that you will never throw anything away. A more productive way is to ask yourself the question: “What does this do for me? Does it lift my energy or does my energy drop when I think about it or look at it?” Use this as a guideline for whether it stays or goes. When your home is filled with objects you love, it becomes an incredible source of nourishment for you. Things you really love have a strong, vibrant energy field around them, whereas things such as unwanted presents have uneasy, conflicting energies attached to them, which drain you rather than energize you.
It’s very powerful to just being surrounded by items that truly spark joy for you. Only those items can serve as a source of positive energy for you. Thus, do your best to clear your home of all the things that don’t vibe with you well and only drain your energy resources.
Trust The Process Of Life
Affirm to yourself: “It’s safe to let go.” Clearing clutter is about letting go and trusting the process of life to bring you what you need rather than keeping things “just in case.”
If you’re one of those people who like to keep things “just in case”, this one is for you. Karen Kingston just nails it with this one in my opinion. Why not ease up a little bit and just go with the flow? Have faith in that what you need will find its way to you. And don’t hold onto things that are not serving you in your current stage of life.
Where are you in your decluttering process? What are you struggling with the most?
