Having a clutter-free and organized home has a decluttering effect on your mind as well. The sheer visual clarity gives your brain a break. It is not distracted by things left out in the open anymore. While physical decluttering provides your mind already more space, you can take it even further. Leverage your “tidy mode”, extend it to your mental space and gain even more mental clarity! Here are some tips on how to keep your mind clear throughout the day.
Turn Off Notifications
Turn off all the notifications on your phone. Get into the habit of checking your Instagram DMs, text messages, Facebook messenger etc. only once or twice per day instead of checking it all the time (you get a notification). Turning off notifications helps with that and will positively influence your mind tremendously.
Meditate
If you don’t do it already, just try it and give it a shot for at least a few weeks. The benefits of meditating have been widely reported.
Exercise
Getting your workout in on a regular basis is not only good for your physical health. It also improves mental clarity and health. So get off the couch and get moving!
Email Schedule
Only check and process your emails twice per day. One hour in the morning and one hour in the evening and close your email tab on your computer in between those times. Set yourself an alarm and a timer and try to stick to it. Your brain will thank you.
One Task At A Time
Focus on one task at a time. Multi-tasking doesn’t really work and you do your mind a favor when you concentrate on one thing at a time. You’ll get more done and use your brain power more optimally.
Quick Tidy
Once a day, put all your items back to where they belong – their “homes”. If you can’t do it every day, do it at least once a week. This prevents your home (AND your mind) from getting cluttered and disorganized (again).
Phone Notes During The Day
If to-do’s or new ideas pop in your head, get them out of your head quickly by jotting them down in your “notes” app on the phone. This prevents these things from swirling around in your head all day long and you can get back to your work with 100% focus.
Paper & Pen Near Bed
This tip ties in with the one above. Since you shouldn’t have your phone in your bedroom, make sure to have a piece of paper and pen on your bedside table at all times. You want to focus on resting and sleeping when you’re in bed. Thus, write down things that come up and you don’t want to forget immediately in order to keep your mind space clear.
Airplane Mode
Turn on airplane mode on your phone when you go to bed and leave it on until the next morning (as long as possible!). This prevents you from checking your emails and scrolling through Instagram shortly after waking up. You can save valuable time and brain space. Instead, get things done in the morning you want to get done that day (e.g., meditate, work out or write this article for work) without the distractions of a turned on phone.
