The KonMari Method™ was first and foremost intended to create a home that sparks joy for you. However, the concept is perfectly suitable to use it in many other areas of your life as well! Below I explain how to apply the KonMari Method™ to 6 other areas of your life.
Digital
A natural (first) progression of the KonMari Method™ is its application to your digital possessions. Although digital items don’t take up physical space, they can contribute to your life’s clutter. So give your virtual possessions the same treatment as your physical ones. Those can include email accounts (incl. folders, labels), your very emails, cloud storage accounts, apps, documents and folders stored on your hard drives and thumb drives, just to name a few. Delete, organize and straighten your systems and get organized once and for all in your digital department!
Work
Does your job spark joy? Do you feel good about your job’s industry, the company you’re working for and your projects? You most likely spend a majority of your time working. If you dread going to work every single day, consider evaluating your job/work situation according to the KonMari Method™. Does it spark joy? If not, what are some steps you can take to change that? Maybe it’s switching departments or applying for a position at a different company. Maybe it’s taking up a side hustle that is more aligned with your passions and could potentially become your main job later on. Whatever it is, take that step towards a more fulfilling work life if this is what you need to do.
Relationships
You can also apply the spark joy concept to the people in your life. Is the partner you’re with “the one”? If not, take steps to change that. The same goes for your friends and relatives. Are those people in your life nurturing your soul? Do you enjoy spending time with them or are they sucking the life out of you? Be honest and make some changes if you feel the need to. Life is too precious to waste your time with people that you know are not good for you. Maybe your evaluation makes you realize that you lack important relationships in your life. If so, go out and start making those connections.
Health & Wellness
How are you doing health-wise? Do you feel healthy physically and mentally? Are you taking good care of yourself (whatever that may mean for you)? If you’ve been neglecting your health and wellness, it likely impacts other areas of your life as well. Find out what sparks joy for you when it comes to health and wellness and course correct if you need to.
Finances
Do your finances spark joy? If this area is a touchy subject, it might be time to deal with it. Your finances can only spark joy if you have clarity in this department. You might want to seek out professional help that can help you with this or you can do it alone. In any case, once you’re clear about every aspect in this department and set necessary structures in place, your finances can bring you joy – promise!
Habits & Routines
Sometimes you might find yourself in a rut of doing things you don’t really want to be doing (anymore). For example, you might find that you’re watching too much TV at night or you’ve been letting your meditation practice slide. Whatever it is; examine your habits and routines and determine things you want to change or improve. Making yourself aware is the first step to (re-)creating joyful habits and routines. Then, find ways to actively change them one step and one day at a time.
