Embarking on your KonMari tidying marathon can seem intimidating. You might think that you won’t succeed for whatever reason. In order to increase your confidence from the outset and set you up for success, here are 6 tips how you can increase the success rate of your KonMari tidying undertaking.
1) Stick To The Method
First and foremost, sustained success of the KonMari Method™ is achieved by sticking to it as closely as possible. Make sure you understand and follow all its principles and guidelines. To do so, either read “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” and “Spark Joy” and/or hire a KonMari Certified Consultant for ultimate guidance. Of course, individual adjustments can be made as long as the main principles are followed.
2) Don’t Forget Your Vision
Envisioning your ideal home and lifestyle is indeed the first and most important principle of the KonMari Method. Many people fail to do this exercise (in a thorough way). Don’t make the same mistake and start off right! Really dig deep on your vision of your ideal living environment and life. Only then you have the best circumstances to succeed AND prevent relapse.
3) Make A Plan
Plan out the days and hours you want to tidy. Schedule them into your calendar like you would a doctor’s appointment or work commitment and stick to them. Depending on your amount of belongings, size of your space as well as other factors you’ll soon discover to factor in, you might want to dedicate one day per category. Or two.
Make an initial plan with enough space between those sessions that allow you to rest, drop off donations bags and so on. Adjust the plan as you see fit along the way but stick to a certain time frame in which you want your tidying to be accomplished. As a general guideline, an individual KonMari tidying festival should be accomplished in six months or (much) less. You know yourself best. So make a plan that looks feasible to you and run with it!
4) Allow Yourself More Time
When devising the suggested plan above, make sure to plan in some wiggle room. Actually, my advice is to allow for double the time as you initially think it’s going to take you. Especially if it’s your first time attempting the KonMari Method™. You likely grossly underestimate the time it’s going to take you to assess each and every item in your home.
Trust me! Just allow yourself more time than you think it’s going to take you. It most likely WILL take you a little longer. In case it doesn’t – well, nothing better than gaining some delicious spare hours, am I right?
5) Accountability
If you perform better when having accountability, appoint a person that holds you accountable throughout your journey. This could be a spouse, a friend or professional help (hint: a KonMari Certified Consultant is happy to help you in that regard). You know yourself best; so determine if you can do it alone, if accountability from an unpaid acquainted source suffices or if a KonMari Consultant is the best choice for you.
6) Practice Maintenance Inbetween
As opposed to breezing through the entire KonMari Method™ in mere days or so, you might want to think about completing one category and then giving yourself a few days/weeks to adjust to the new organization and practice maintaining it.
Keeping up your newfound organization might take some time and can feel overwhelming at times. If it does, allow yourself the time to get used to it and practice (e.g., practice folding clothes and putting it away). Let it become your second nature before you feel comfortable enough to move onto the next KonMari category.
