KonMari tidying – doing it once and for all! – is oftentimes a lot of work. It can be really, really difficult to boot. Why? It has to do with building a new habit. You’re putting in the work to move through your tidying marathon. And then, you have to maintain your newly created order. It’s one thing to complete your tidying marathon. It’s another thing to keep up your newly created order. They go hand in hand and both need to happen in order for lasting change to occur.
Why Maintenance Is So Hard
While a KonMari tidying marathon only needs to occur once in your lifetime, maintenance is ongoing. And that’s where things can go awry and relapse can occur if you don’t maintain your tidiness. Maintaining your tidy home is a habit. A habit that is typically brand new. And as you might know, changing habits (in this case: behaving tidy instead of messy on an ongoing basis) can be a challenge.
Changing a habit is like strengthening a muscle. It’s like repeating the same exercise over and over and over and over again. Until it becomes natural. Until it becomes engrained in you and literally a part of you where you don’t even have to think about it anymore. Adopting a new habit isn’t always comfortable in the beginning. In fact, it can be really f***ing hard! But putting in the work will eventually pay off. You will reap the benefits you manifested in your vision you developed before embarking on your tidying journey.
Believe In Yourself
Don’t give up just because it’s hard. Don’t say, “I’m a messy person. That’s just who I’ve always been and that’s who I’ll always be.” Challenge yourself! If you have a great enough desire to change, you can do it. No matter how hard it is in the beginning. No matter how often you slip up in those early days when your KonMari tidy muscle is still weak. Keep repeating and it will get stronger.
Enlist Support
Strengthening your tidy muscle isn’t easy. It requires discipline, knowledge, and consistently putting in the work. Some people can do it alone and some can’t and need a little support. And that’s why you can hire a coach – a KonMari Certified Consultant – who not only helps you with the technical side of the project (aka, how to do the KonMari Method™ right, project management, time management, etc.), but also the mental and emotional side of things.
Hiring tidy help is just like hiring a personal trainer if you want to get in shape. A personal trainer is an expert in the field of improving your physical fitness. She guides you to reach your body goals. You just need to put in the work and listen to your trainer. The same is true with a personal “tidy” trainer. He or she is an expert in the KonMari Method™ and whipping your tidying behavior into shape if you trust and follow her guidance.
How far along are you on your KonMari tidying journey and how strong is your tidy muscle?
