When you’re attempting something new it can feel quite overwhelming. This is especially true when you try to tidy your home. Usually, the reason why you want to tidy your home is that you already feel overwhelmed. So the thought of going through all your things oftentimes increases the feeling of overwhelm. Here are four tips to show you how to not get overwhelmed when KonMari tidying:
1) Follow The KonMari Method™
The good thing about using the KonMari Method™ when tidying is that it provides you with a structure on how to proceed. So really the only thing you need to do is to follow the method’s guidelines as closely as possible. Stick to its core principles, follow the category order and you’re good to go. Don’t overthink the method or come up with your own little rules, simply trust and follow the KonMari Method™ – that’s the beauty of a proven method.
2) Use Our KonMari Category Checklist
One of the reasons you might feel overwhelmed when thinking about tidying is that you don’t know where to start. This is especially true when you have a lot of things to go through. A typical American household has 300,000 items (yeah, let that number sink in) – so it’s no wonder that overwhelm sets in when you’re at the beginning of your tidying adventure. Thankfully, the KonMari Method™ already provides you with five categories and a rough order on how to follow these categories. Our KonMari Category Checklist breaks down those categories even further. Get it HERE and you’re all set to start tidying.
3) Create Space & Make A Plan
Overwhelm is also created by cramming too much into your daily schedule. If you want to succeed in your KonMari tidying, you need to purposefully create space for it. You have to make it a priority for the time being. Get out your calendar and see what other activities can be put on hold for now. Schedule in your tidying sessions. Make an appointment with yourself and block off time in your calendar. I suggest to be consistent and schedule at least one tidying session per week.
4) Give Yourself Time
Allow yourself enough time to do the tidying. Oftentimes, things take longer than originally anticipated – especially if you’ve never done them before. As long as you’re being consistent and sticking to the method’s principles, you’re on the right track. Be ok with the idea that tidying all of your things might take longer than you originally anticipated (it doesn’t have to be, of course, but it sometimes is). Take off the pressure of time and you’ll feel less overwhelmed.
