When you embark on a KonMari journey, you start with decluttering your clothes. Clothing is supposed to be the easiest category to start with so that you can practice your joy checking skills and prepare for more difficult categories on your journey. However, for some people, clothing might not be so easy because they have clothes in their wardrobe that don’t fit them at the moment. They might need to gain or lose weight (depending on their goal) in order to fit into these clothes (again).
Naturally, those people have a hard time letting go of those “goal clothes”. If you have the same problem on your KonMari journey, here are my suggestions how to go about it in 4 steps:
Step 1) Be Honest With Yourself
If you decided to “konmari” your life, chances are that you’re ready to confront yourself. That often means you’re ready to face the “uglier” things you’re not particularly comfortable with but want to change or overcome. So when it comes to clothes that don’t fit at the moment, I encourage you to get honest with yourself but also acknowledge your envisioned ideal lifestyle at the same time. Specifically, I suggest determining a realistic weight or size goal you can achieve in 6 to 8 months. And start working towards that goal from now on!
Step 2) Keep Only Those Items That Spark Joy
Keep ONLY your favorite, joy sparking clothes you’d be able to fit in after the time frame you determined in step 1 (see above). Take the plunge and dispose of the rest. If the thought of this bothers you because you think that you’d have to buy a whole new wardrobe after achieving your goal, remind yourself WHY you’re on this journey. “Konmari’ing” your life is about only keeping the things that spark joy for you and having faith in that life will bring you what you need if you go with the flow and free yourself up to the possibilities of what life will bring you.
Step 3) Make Your Goal Clothes Visible
Choose 5 items of your “goal clothes” you love the most and visibly display them in your closet. Keep them separate from the clothes you are wearing currently but put them in a spot where you can see them on an everyday basis. Doing this should provide you with the motivation to keep up with your efforts to achieve your goal of wearing those clothes again soon.
Step 4) Re-Evaluate
Set a reminder on your calendar after the 6 to 8 months (or whatever time frame you set for yourself in step 1) and re-evaluate. If you have achieved your goal, great! If you haven’t, I suggest disposing of your “goal clothes.” Maybe you come to realize that this goal of yours is not a priority for you right now. I challenge you to flow with it. Live your present life and let go of past and future attachments. (Also, keep in mind that people often achieve desired body sizes AFTER letting go of their attachments ;).
Pro tip: If you love clothes and find yourself shopping and accumulating more than you’d like all the time, consider using clothing rental services like Rent The Runway, Nuuly or Mod.Lux.Rent.
