Are you having fun on your KonMari tidying journey? Or maybe you started but stopped because you haven’t been enjoying it? If that’s you, here are some practical tips how you can make tidying more enjoyable or even fun:
Allow Enough Time
Schedule enough time for your KonMari tidying festival. Don’t squeeze it in as an additional thing you have to do but purposefully make space for it in your schedule. If you give yourself time to really dig into this adventure wholeheartedly, it will also become more enjoyable. Guaranteed!
Set A Timer
Now, setting a timer might not seem fun from the outset. But hear me out: I suggest you dedicate a good chunk of time (e.g., 5 hours, but no less than 3) each time you’re tidying. In order to stay focused and challenge yourself to complete what you set out to do, set a timer, hit “Start” and then it’s GO-time! And then, don’t look back, completely focus on tidying and know that when the timer goes off you’ll have accomplished a large chunk of work. Treat it like a (fun) game and get accomplished as much as you can during the time you allocate.
Treat Yourself
Sometimes you might want to treat yourself after you’re done with (let’s say) one of the five main categories. Or maybe after an especially long tidying day. Celebrate by treating yourself to something you enjoy doing. For instance, book a facial, go out to dinner, grab your friend and go watch a movie. Whatever it is, go and enjoy yourself if that’s something that helps you make tidying more enjoyable.
Get Company
Having support and encouragement throughout your KonMari journey can add tremendously to your overall enjoyment. So there are several ways you can go about this. First, you might have a friend who wants to tidy as well. So you could agree on working on your things the same day/time and then report back to each other about your accomplishments that day. Not only does this make it more fun, but it also holds you accountable.
If you don’t have a friend who wants to do it at the same time as you, consider hiring a KonMari Consultant! Apart from getting things done more effectively and efficiently, you can count on a consultant to be there for you in whatever way you need her to. A third option to get company throughout the KonMari process would be to join a KonMari Facebook group. There are several of those groups out there and I’m sure that the right kind of group can be helpful in providing similar kinds of support like a real-life friend.
Embrace It Fully
If you make it a point to fully embrace your tidying undertaking you can enhance your overall experience in a positive way. Rather than dreading the tidying, try and think about it in a positive and uplifting way. Look at it as something you actively choose and want to do, rather than something you “must” do. Such change in perspective can make all the difference. Celebrate your KonMari journey and embrace it even more by documenting it in some way. You might want to journal about it and/or take pictures throughout. Make the experience so that it uplifts you and you’re having fun throughout!
