This post is part of the KonMari Series in which I document my journey to becoming a certified KonMari organizing consultant. Start from the beginning here and/or see all posts of the series here.
Today, I’m writing about the feedback I received for my practice hour reports as well as the last step on my journey – the online assessment exam.
Practice Reports Feedback
After about 4 weeks of waiting, I received an email from the KonMari team informing me that I had passed the practice reports. I was very relieved, to say the least, because I had heard from other consultants (in training) that had to re-write reports. Some even were required to do some more practice hours! So that was out of the way.
Exam – Round 1
In the email, I also received the link to the online assessment exam – the last step in my certification process to becoming a Certified KonMari Consultant. There were about 7 questions in total and answers were to be limited to a certain word count. I looked through all the questions and decided I wanted to skim through the two books (“The Life-Changing Magic Of Tidying Up” and “Spark Joy”) again.
I didn’t read the entire books but read certain passages that helped inform my answers to some of the questions. Then, I crafted my answers and tweaked them so that they adhered to the required word length. Preparation and actual writing the exam took me about 1 or 2 days.
I definitely took my time to really think about the questions and my answers and anticipated what the KonMari team would like to hear. After all, I would only have 2 more attempts at the exam if my first submittal wasn’t accepted. Then, (if I remember correctly) I would have to do another round of practice hours. So I submitted my exam about a week after receiving the questions.
Exam – Round 2
I heard back 2.5 weeks later and was asked to re-submit my answers to 3 questions. Bummer! I remember when I received this email: I was in Melbourne at the time on our big Australia-tour last November. So the last thing I wanted to do on my vacation was to spend time re-crafting my exam. To be honest, I was hoping to pass seamlessly just like I did with my practice lessons.
But that wasn’t the case this time. So I spent some time to re-do the part of the exam I was asked to. It wasn’t a huge deal; I basically changed parts and included some suggestions from the KonMari team and sent it off – hoping for a better result this time.
Mid-December, I received another email in which I was told that I had passed – finally! What followed was a short phone conversation with the KonMari Community and Project Manager who asked me a couple questions about myself and we went over next steps. I was required to sign the Consultant contract and pay an activation fee of $500 to activate my KonMari Consultant certification.
After that, I received a welcome package via email, including my green consultant badge, photos and other material useful for marketing purposes, etc. My profile on the KonMari Consultants page was activated and I could call myself a Certified KonMari Consultant. Also, in order to maintain my certification status I have to pay $500 every calendar year except for the first year which is free.
The End Of A Journey
What had begun in May of 2017 was coming to an end. In May the past year, I listened to Tim Ferriss interview Marie Kondo. I went on to visit her website and Instagram and I somehow discovered her consultant program and decided that this was exactly what I was meant to be doing. And now I’m in the midst of establishing and growing my business and helping clients simplify their homes and lives by way of the KonMari Method.
