Books* can be organized in many different ways. You could arrange them by genre, title name, author name, publishing year or in a decorative way. The latter leads me to this post’s subject: how to create a rainbow-colored bookshelf. Arranging your books by color is one way of decorating with your books. And this article will show you exactly how you can do it too in a step-by-step way.
Order
Arranging your books in the order of the rainbow colors makes sense because its specific order naturally looks cohesive. So first, we need to figure out the rainbow color order. A quick Google search provides you with the following order:
- Red
- Orange
- Yellow
- Green
- Blue
- Indigo
- Violet
Sort
Sort your books roughly into the seven colors of the rainbow listed above. Do that by looking at the main color of the book spine. In addition, you’ll need to create two additional stacks of books of white and black colored books.
Now, of course, there will be books that don’t fall into any of the colors mentioned, such as grey or pink. However, you just put those books with the color stacks that resemble their color the most. That is, put the greys with the black and the pink with the red.
Consider
Google “rainbow colored bookshelf” for inspiration and to get some ideas how an end result could look like. Also, look at your bookshelf type* and the amount of books* you have. All those elements will influence how you want and can arrange your books.
Consider if you want to start with black books that transition into dark violet and add the white ones after the light red ones. Or you could put the black and white books together (in one row; going from white to gray to black or the other way around); separate from the colored ones [see example below].
Think about if you want to go row by row or if you want each shelf to resemble the one above/below it in terms of color arrangement.
Within the color sections, make sure there’s some order too. Keep similar shades of one color together and create smooth transitions between color sections.
Execute
Whatever way you do it, have fun with it and play around with different versions! Sometimes it takes a while to figure out the perfect arrangement for your bookshelf. (Also, check out some book shelves & organizing products!)
