Can I let you in on a secret? I dread folding my own laundry. There you have it. The other day, there was a big pile of clean, dry clothes, sheets and towels sitting in my laundry basket for over a week. It became bigger and bigger as I kept doing loads of laundry. Finally, I took some time to get it done and I filmed this little video to hold me accountable.
KonMari Work vs. My Own Chores
I’m sure some of you might be surprised since what I do for a living involves teaching and helping people how to fold their clothes and various other things (even though that’s just a tiny fraction of what I do). Now, don’t get me wrong, this part of my work is actually one of my favorites! Isn’t it weird? I enjoy showing and helping my customers fold their clothes, but can’t be bothered with my own stuff!
Well, honestly, I don’t think it’s weird. Why I enjoy the work with my clients is because folding their clothes neatly in a way that looks beautiful, is functional and saves time usually happens close to the beginning of our working together. It signifies a moment that shows them what’s possible. It’s usually a joyful experience for them. In turn, it brings me great joy and satisfaction to be able to show them how things can be different, better. It’s just a reflection and metaphor of what the future can look like and hold in store.
Why I Dread Folding Yet Still Do It
Yet folding my own laundry is just a chore. I don’t really enjoy doing chores. Sure, I like things neat and tidy in my home, that’s why I fold my clothes and do what needs to be done. But I’m not one of those people who find folding or cooking or cleaning particularly enjoyable. People often assume that all I like to do is tidying up my home. This couldn’t be further from the truth! The main reason I do this is because it gives me the time, organization and mental space I need to run a business and do the 5 million other things I rather do with my life. Investing some time in maintaining a tidy home (and life) gets me this return on investment.
