I often hear from people that they don’t know how or where to start when it comes to decluttering and organizing their homes. I get it. It can be super overwhelming looking at all the things you have to do and your goal seems so far away.
The good news is that you can achieve your goal if you’re following a strategic approach. When it comes to tidying up your home, I recommend the KonMari Method™. It’s a system that, followed step by step, leads you to where you want to be. The key is that you follow it to a T. Yep, no shortcuts!
I’m writing a whole blog post about this because I always get questions like “Well, can I start with a different category?” or “I’m not gonna fold my clothes because I don’t want to do it, so can I skip this?”. So essentially what they’re telling me is that they want to alter the method in a significant way and I usually gently advise against it and recommend following the KonMari Method ™ to a T.
Why? Well, first of all, if you alter a system in a significant way it’s not the original method anymore. And thus you can’t expect the same results from it anymore! Makes sense? Yeah.
Also, and that ties in closely with the previous point, the KonMari Method™ is a proven, tried and tested method. Marie Kondo has developed and perfected it over many, many years in her practice of helping people tidy up their homes. It works when it’s applied correctly.
Sure, there are always exceptions. I’m “customizing” aspects of the method with my clients when it makes sense. BUT, I always recommend sticking to the method as closely as possible to yield the desired results.
If something is uncomfortable or new, something you might not be used to doing, I always suggest to just try it out. If you don’t try something out, how can you know that it works? You can’t. And I can tell you, I’ve worked with so many people who said that they would never keep up with the folding. And you know what happened? They tried it, loved the result, and even the actual folding process that they’ve kept up with it to this day!
Just trust the process, give in, and follow the KonMari Method ™’s principles as closely as possible. There’s nothing to lose but only to gain.
Have you been having resistance to follow the method’s system at all?
